Abstract: In this paper, CloudSat/CALIPSO data are used to analyze the macroscopic characteristics of cloud in northwestern Shanxi province. The results show that the annual average probability of cloud occurrence in northwestern Shanxi province is 58.1 %. The probability of cloud occurrence in spring is the highest, followed by summer, and autumn and winter are relatively low. Among the 8 types of clouds, except St,7 types of clouds, including Ci, As, Ac, Sc, Cu, Ns and Dc, appeared in northwestern Shanxi province. The distribution of all types of clouds showed significant seasonal characteristics. The annual cloud layer distribution is dominated by single-layer cloud system, and multi-layer cloud system accounts for a small proportion. The probability and vertical distribution characteristics of various types of clouds in single-layer and multi-layer clouds are quite different. The results provide reference and basis for cloud morphology and development law, local climate research and numerical model simulation in northwestern Shanxi province.
